Saturday, we built the main stairs for the deck. These line up with our sliding door, so the view to our patio (and beyond) is unobstructed. The first step was cutting the stringers, as you deck-building types call them.
Because these stairs will be five(ish) feet wide, we needed four stringers to adhere to the City of Des Moines ludicrously worry-wart code. Now, I love our fair city, but I'll be the first to tell you that the deck-building code her is a little Debbie Downer. No gap anywhere can be large enough to fit a baby through. At least that's what I assume they mean by four inches. Babies, you may visit our deck without fear or peril.
Once the four stringers were up, we added the posts.
Then, it was time for deck boards. At long last, we could gracefully exit the deck without grunting and hoping we don't twist an ankle when we jump the 36 inches down.
Watch as we demonstrate the stair-iness by sitting at two different levels! Who-ah, people. Bully and tally ho!
Love that stair-iness!
